1st Grade Inquiry-Based Learning Projects
The Wonderful World of Animals
Students in 1st grade have been learning about The Wonderful World of Animals. They are working in pairs to read and find information about an animal of their choice so they can share their knowledge and understanding of their animal on a thinglink. They went through the Super 3 (Plan, Do, & Review) research steps with Mrs. Cerny and used PebbleGo to find answers to their questions. Finally, they created a thinglink to share and present all that they learned with their peers, teachers, and community members.

And the winner is...
The first grade students at WPS learned about the election process by starting to ask questions such as "Why am I important?" "How can I make a difference and contribute to my society?" and "How does my vote count?" The students learned about two book characters, Bad Kitty and Scaredy Squirrel, who are "running for President." After learning about the characteristics of these book characters, and what they stood for, students had the opportunity to vote for who they felt would make the best President.

My Kind of Hero
Second grade students embarked on a fabulous journey to research and explore the lives of African-Americans throughout history. Students were given a choice as to which African-American they wanted to learn about and student groups were created based on those choices. Each group member had a job which contributed to the research process, and together they produced a product that demonstrated what they learned about the person they researched. At the end of the month, all classes gathered in the gym to showcase their work either with a PowerPoint Presentation, a poster, Reader's Theater, a written poem, or something of their choice.
